Update of the website of the Economic Statistics Branch to support the implementation of the System of National Accounts, 2025 (2025 SNA) in Member States
The Economics Statistics Branch (ESB) of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is responsible for the development and implementation of the System of National Accounts and supporting economic statistics. Its main areas of economic statistics comprise national accounts, international merchandise trade statistics, international trade in services, business statistics, including business registers, and industrial statistics.
At its fifty-sixth session, held in New York from 4 to 7 March 2025, the Statistical Commission adopted the 2025 SNA as the updated international statistical standard for national accounts statistics (decision 56/101 ), endorsed the implementation strategy for the 2025 SNA; and emphasized the need for capacity-building for Member States with limited resources to facilitate the implementation of the 2025 SNA in an internationally comparable and coordinated way.
The ESB website is the backbone of the Statistics Division's capacity-building activities in national accounts and in supporting economic statistics. It includes statistical standards and compilation guidance, as well as best practices and information about international coordination and capacity building. It is the entry point for Member States to seek information about international statistical standards in national accounts and supporting economic statistics and classifications, and guidance for their implementation.
Currently, the ESB's main areas of work lack a uniform look and feel, and the information is not presented coherently or focused on supporting capacity-building efforts. The pages of each specific area of work appear as separate entities, with no consistent theme and without thematic interlinkages across them. Furthermore, they are developed using different technologies and content management systems. To achieve the above-mentioned task of uniformity and coherence, the National Accounts Section (ESB/NAS) website should serve as a starting point for the development of a new content management system and underlying infrastructure, which can be replicated individually across other areas of work and enable timely updates of web content across different areas and themes targeted to support countries in the implementation of the 2025 SNA and supporting economic statistics
To address these maintenance shortfalls, the following activities are required:
• A full redesign: Migrate to a responsive, modern framework.
• Enhanced update mechanisms: Implement version control for all resources, integration with APIs for real-time data pulls.
• Application of the design to existing pages disseminating data to harmonize the look and feel of the pages.
