The technical workshop on time, places, people and relationships to organize social and demographic outcomes and statistics is organized by UNSD and hosted by Statistics Canada.
The workshop aims to:
• Enhance national capacities, particularly in developing countries, to test and operationalize the building blocks TIME, PLACES, PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS as a lens to better organize social and demographic outcomes and statistics.
• Promote a shared understanding of the conceptual framework being advanced by the Friends of the Chair Group on Social and Demographic Statistics and how it can be applied to organize social and demographic statistics in a coherent and integrated manner;
• Refine the conceptual framework based on national experiences, technical inputs, and emerging user needs;
• Exchange national experiences and innovations in data production, integration, and dissemination that align with the proposed framework, including practical applications, institutional arrangements, and lessons learned;
• Identify technical and operational priorities for piloting and implementing the new approach at the national level, including tools, guidance, capacity-building needs, and opportunities for collaboration;
• Strengthen the alignment of the conceptual framework with global agendas, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Pact for the Future, and initiatives to develop new measures of progress beyond GDP;
• Foster partnerships and peer learning among national statistical offices, regional and international organizations, and other stakeholders to support coherent implementation and promote long-term sustainability of the approach.
The Statistical Commission in its decision 55/112 (E/2024/24-E/CN.3/2024/36 ), endorsed the revised Guide to Producing Statistics on Time Use; took note of the interest expressed by countries in using the proposed methods, and requested the Statistics Division and partners to support countries in the implementation of the Guide, in collaboration with regional actors, to ensure its national relevance and effective implementation. Moreover, in its decision 56/108 (E/2025/24-E/CN.3/2025/37) the Commission, approved further research on a conceptual framework for social and demographic statistics, building on the elements TIME, PLACES, PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS to organize social outcomes and emphasize the need to consider innovative approaches as well as country contexts, available resources and implementation capacity.
