Notes
UNSD in cooperation with other partners is regularly conducting trainings on the implementation of SDMX for data exchange and national data and metadata dissemination. In particular, many countries are lagging behind in the standard dissemination of their metadata. The integration of SDMX dissemination into digital products offers an opportunity to address this deficiency. In this proposal on the integration of SDG data and metadata into statistical outputs via SDMX, UNSD will implement a linkage of SDG data and metadata with the UNdata mobile app.
All global SDG data and metadata is available on UNSD’s Global SDG Indicators Data Platform via SDMX APIs. In particular, the SDG metadata is disseminated through a SDMX API in a machine-readable format. A template is used to convert the metadata and the infrastructure behind is maintained by UNSD. The UNdata mobile app is a free app produced by the United Nations that gives users portable access to a compilation of key statistical indicators organized into 4 sections: general information, economic indicators, social indicators, environmental and infrastructure indicators for 30 geographical regions and over 200 countries and areas of the world. It responds to the General Assembly resolution 2626 (XXV), in which the Secretary-General has requested to supply basic national data that will increase international public awareness of countries' development efforts. The app is multilingual, and users can choose between English, French and Spanish.

Request summary
During this project, UNSD plans to update both apps, Android and iOS, with the 2024 data that are already available and whose content will fully resemble the printed version of the World Statistics Pocketbook 2024. For those SDG indicators included, a link to SDG data and metadata from the app will be added. In order to achieve this, UNSD plans to fix some shortcomings that external and internal users have identified in the SDG user interface including the API and other relevant parts of the system such as those related to the SDG metadata. These fixes will facilitate the integration and use of the SDG data and metadata links in the UNdata apps.
The budget will cover the contractual services needed to update the UNdata apps and fix some components in the SDG infrastructure, including SDG metadata.
UNSD will utilize this use case of the integration of SDG data and metadata into statistical outputs via SDMX in its forthcoming SDMX Regional Training Workshop organized and hosted by OECD in collaboration with other international agencies, including UNSD, SESRIC, ESCAP and UNESCO that will take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 4-6 December 2024. Participants will be trained in the extraction of SDG data and metadata and its integration into digital products such as the UNdata apps.
