Notes
The General Assembly resolution 70/1 Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls for data that is “high-quality, accessible, timely, reliable and disaggregated by income, sex, age, race, ethnicity, migration status, disability and geographic location and other characteristics relevant in national contexts.” Improving interoperability, timeliness, and accessibility is key to the provision of data in support of evidence-based decision making.

Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) is an international standard that is extensively used for dissemination and reporting. In the European Union, national governments are legally obligated to report their statistical data to the European Commission in the SDMX format. Outside of the EU, countries are increasingly turning to SDMX to improve the quality and interoperability of their statistical dissemination and reporting while reducing the reporting burden.

UNSD has long provided capacity building to the Member States in SDMX reporting and dissemination, particularly in the context of the MDGs and SDGs. As a result, many countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East have established SDG dissemination platforms based on SDMX, and reported their data to UNSD, the Regional Commissions, and other parties. These activities have been primarily funded by extra-budgetary sources; more recently, RPTC has taken an increasingly important role, particularly in the context of a highly successful joint UNSD-ESCWA initiative that led to the establishment of SDMX-based reporting of SDG indicators in the Arab region.

The Workshop is being organized and hosted by OECD in collaboration with other international agencies, such as UNSD, SESRIC, ESCAP and UNESCO. It is planned to take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 4-6 December 2024 (3 days).

UNSD will bring to this workshop some Member States in response to the UN Statistical Commission’s request (E/2023/24-E/CN.3/2023/37) for more training in the subject matter. The workshop will move beyond basic concepts and will enable participants to strengthen their SDMX facilities for dissemination and reporting of data, including SDGs. The workshop will also facilitate interactive dialogue among the countries.
Request summary
The Workshop is being organized and hosted by OECD in collaboration with other international agencies, such as UNSD, SESRIC, ESCAP and UNESCO. It is planned to take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 4-6 December 2024 (3 days). The Workshop will bring together statisticians and IT specialists from various national statistical offices already familiar in the use of SDMX and data modelling as part of their work. Participants will learn to optimise a data model for effective dissemination, enrich it with relevant reference metadata, and establish automated processes for future data updates. The workshop will facilitate the dissemination and reporting of statistical data including the SDGs.
