Notes
1. August 2023 – during my mission on policy/technical support to the Government of Vanuatu – PM Office, they indicated interest and requested DESA support in identifying possible opportunities for Vanuatu to have south-south-exchange with other countries on private financing for economic and social development using PPPs as a tool.
2. Q3/2023 – I put in a RPTC idea on this leveraging the SIDS4 so that the SSE is cost effective.
3. Q4 (Dec)/2024 – Upon the RPTC proposal being cleared by OD as priority 1 proposal I communicated the same to Collin and the GoV PM Office is eager and very interested for this to happen (see attached email).
4. Q1 (Feb)/2024 – I discussed draft proposal with Collin to obtain the government’s thoughts on the design, approach and countries being considered for their input. Collin suggested we include recovery and rehabilitation to frequent cyclones/disasters as a development need that they also want to explore private financing including the use of PPPs.The Government will liaise with the IFC, ADB and Japan who are interested in the event in terms of their collaboration. I discussed the IFIs interest with Shantanu and he indicated that it is fine.
Request summary
This proposal seeks to take advantage of SIDS4 as an opportune global policy space for the Government of Vanuatu with support from UNDESA, and in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), to co-organise a Side Event on South-South-Exchange on Attracting and Securing Private Financing and Expertise for Inclusive and Resilient Prosperity.
