Endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission in June 2008, SDMX is recognized as a preferred standard for data and its related meta-information, has been approved as an ISO standard (17369:2013). The SDMX initiative was started and is sponsored by seven international organizations (BIS, ECB, Eurostat, OECD, IMF, UN, and WB). As coordinator of the Working Group on SDMX for SDG Indicators established by the IAEG-SDGs, UNSD has a responsibility for, and has delivered, capacity building to the Member States in SDMX for SDG monitoring. In its most recent report E/2023/24-E/CN.3/2023/37, as well as previous reports, the United Nations Statistical Commission expressed its appreciation for the progressed made by the Working Group and encouraged more capacity development efforts in this area.

This workshop is organized jointly with ESCWA for the Arab region countries. ESCWA will co-facilitate and co-fund the event including additional countries.

The workshop took place 5-8 June 2023 in Amman, Jordan.

UNSD and ESCWA are organizing a joint Workshop on the Use of the Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) Standard for Reporting the SDG indicators in Amman from 5th to 8th of June 2023. The Workshop will bring together statisticians and IT specialists from various national statistical offices in the Arab region. The event will provide hands-on training on data mapping and conversion using the SDMX standard tools as per international standards respecting Content Constraints for disaggregation and adhering to the official SDG framework, as well as hands-on examples on customizing national Data Structure Definitions (DSDs), the workshop will brief participants on SDMX Reference Infrastructure (SDMX-RI) tool, DSD Constructor and Matrix Generator. The participants will share national experiences on implementing automated data and metadata exchange for statistical indicators using the ESCWA SDMX Converter. The Workshop will be organized for a duration of four days (5th June- 8th June 2023) and will include presentations, demonstrations, and Q&A sessions, and hands-on exercises as a main focus of this course.
