Empowering Sri Lanka Through Statistical Advancements: The UN DESA Partnership
In a significant stride towards sustainable development, Sri Lanka, with the pivotal support of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) through its Statistics Division (SD), has made remarkable progress in enhancing its statistical systems. This collaboration, deeply rooted in our shared commitment to data-driven development, has revolutionized how Sri Lanka collects, analyzes, and disseminates data, aligning it with global standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Our journey together took a notable step forward in November last year during a comprehensive workshop aimed at addressing the challenges within Sri Lanka’s statistical system. This event, a testament to the partnership's strength, facilitated a hands-on approach to building local capacity, bringing together statisticians, policymakers, and data users. It underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared learning in driving sustainable development.
The UN DESA's role in this transformative journey highlights our dedication to enhancing statistical capacities worldwide. By fostering an environment where informed policy-making and effective governance thrive on reliable and timely data, we are paving the way for a future where every decision is underpinned by solid statistical evidence.
“I express my sincere delight in having the services of DESA and extend my heartfelt appreciation to their invaluable contributions to this endeavor.”
– Director General of The Department of Census and Statistics, Sri Lanka
Upcoming Workshop in April 2024
Continuing our efforts to support and empower Sri Lanka in its quest for statistical excellence, we are excited to announce an upcoming workshop scheduled for April 2024 in Sri Lanka. This workshop aims to further engage with Members of the Parliament and other key stakeholders to advocate for and enhance understanding of the significance of revised statistical legislation. This initiative is crucial for emphasizing the importance of modern statistical practices and regulatory frameworks in producing high-quality, disaggregated, and timely statistics essential for monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Join us as we celebrate this milestone and continue to support Sri Lanka and other nations in harnessing the potential of their data for a brighter, more sustainable future.
