May 2024 — The 9th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) convened, gathering over 600 stakeholders and representatives from more than 100 Member States and large online audience via UN WebTV. This year's Forum highlighted many practical examples, proposed recommendations for action, and focused on leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and addressing climate change to propel sustainable development across the globe.
Harnessing STI for the SDGs
During the Forum, experts discussed how AI-driven precision farming could potentially increase agricultural yields by up to 70% by 2050, while AI-driven efficiency improvements are projected to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 4% by 2030. These initiatives are critical as they contribute directly to Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 13, 16, and 17—ranging from no poverty and zero hunger to climate action and peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Spotlight on Young Innovators
A highlight of the Forum was the presentation of solutions by 12 young innovators, sponsored by the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG). These innovators, identified in collaboration with ASME and the Technology Facilitation Mechanism's 10-Member Group, showcased diverse and impactful technologies.
Presentations of solutions by young innovators featured at the Forum:
- Atuservicio Bogotá: A digital platform enhancing crisis management capabilities within marginalized communities.
- Bboxx: A super platform driving access to electric mobility in Africa, changing the landscape of vehicle ownership.
- Uganda Spiral Water Wheel Pump: A sustainable, fuel-free irrigation solution tapping into the kinetic energy of flowing rivers.
- Solar Ice Block Machine: Developed for Sub-Saharan Africa, this device uses solar energy to reduce food waste through improved storage conditions.
These innovations not only provide practical solutions but also embody the Forum’s commitment to fostering inclusive technology ecosystems that address local and global challenges.
Bridging the STI Gap
The Forum underscored the critical need for increased research funding and more robust international cooperation to bridge the STI capacity gap. Notably, delegates stressed that women-founded startups receive a minimal fraction of venture capital, highlighting a significant area for improvement in gender equality within STEM fields.
Strategic Collaborations and Future Outlook
The discussions at the Forum also paved the way for strategic actions to create sustainable built environments, enhance cooperation among research funders, and leverage AI and biotechnology for food security. A background note was prepared on the strategic thematic areas of AI, climate change, and the SDGs to inform ongoing and future initiatives.
