At the request of the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning and with financial support of UNFPA-Indonesia, the Population Division conducted a national seminar on population ageing and its economic and fiscal consequences in Jakarta, Indonesia on 1 July 2019. Participants in attendance were from the Ministry of Development Planning, National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K), Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Finance, Social Security Agency for Healthcare, Social Security Agency for Workers, the Central Bureau of Statistics, National Population and Family Planning Board, and local universities. The seminar discussed the impact of changing age structure on economic growth as well as the challenges in “future-proofing” social programs (education, health care, and pensions) to insure their sustainability in an older and wealthier Indonesia.
